Which guitar effect is best when wanting to hit a solo during a rock song?

When playing guitar in a band and it is time to hit your solo, which guitar effect is best suited for cranking up your volume and allowing you to stand out from the rest of the band? Should I try an overdrive pedal? Distortion? Compressor?
